10/21/2023 0 Comments Editready pcThe solution is often to transcode to a lower quality ‘proxy’ version of the media that is much easier to edit with and takes up a lot less hard drive space. But they represent the highest possible quality version of the media. These place huge demands on the editing system in terms of the required CPU, GPU and storage capacities. Most modern cinema cameras shoot in very large resolutions (4K, 6K, 8K, 12K etc.) and in RAW uncompressed file formats. In video post-production there are numerous stages of the process that usually require some transcoding. Here the former is higher quality in comparison to the latter but has a larger file size. Apple ProRes often does a great job in this regard and it can be difficult to visually distinguish between, for example, ProRes 422 and ProRes LT. It is worth mentioning that there are also some smart codecs that are ‘visually lossless’, which is to say that you can’t tell by looking at them whether they are the original or the transcoded version. But, on the other hand, yes transcoding reduces quality, but usually this is the intention because you’re throwing away some of the data in order to reduce the file size or serve another purpose. There is no ‘generational’ loss between the copies if you don’t intend to introduce one. In some senses, no transcoding doesn’t reduce quality, in the way that taking a photocopy of something might do - especially if you take a photocopy of a photocopy. It all depends on how you do it and why you’re doing it. Let’s take a look at some common video transcoding workflows and some of the important considerations for each.īut before we do, one question we need to consider is: Does transcoding reduce quality? Or, the high-resolution makes adding effects and filters bog down the system to another stand still. Even the fastest hard drive would struggle to deliver data quickly enough from the drive to the computer without skipping or dropping frames, leading to stuttering playback. The file sizes are often too large for anything. Any editor who has worked with high-quality, computationally-intense and storage-hogging video files knows that this doesn’t make for a smooth or efficient video editing experience. Transcoding the video files in this way ensures the best possible experience for the end user at the time. These might include Blu-Ray MPEG files, H.264 mp4’s for online streaming and many more. These would then be transcoded from the master files into the various distribution formats required.Once editing is completed, the final master files would be created, transcoding them from the editing format to the delivery specification, and delivered.Transcode the original camera files into a more editing friendly format. So if we add all of this together we can see why video transcoding is so useful and essential at different stages of the video post-production workflow.Īt each stage of the process different media files are created with different uses in mind.Īs a general rule the files created at the start of this process will be at their highest raw quality, while thereafter some compromises will be made in order to balance the requirements of visual quality, file size and computing power depending on what is needed. So in our opening example, the original iPhone video would likely have had a higher quality audio and video bitrate and video resolution (for example, 1920 x 1080) than the version that was transcoded and shared on WhatsApp (for example 640 x 360). Video Frame Rate (24 fps, 25 fps, 29.97 fps etc).Video Bitrate (How much data is given to each frame, higher = better quality). This is because the ProRes codec is easy for computers to work with and it can deliver high quality looking files at a fraction of the storage space.Īll video and audio files also have other important parameters that can also be changed during the transcoding process to better suit the intended purpose these parameters all affect the final file size and media quality. mov file for easier editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. But these can be transcoded to another format, such as a ProRes. MXF files take up a lot of storage space and require a lot of computer power to handle. And then either putting it back into the same wrapper or changing the file format too.įor example, camera original files such as.Making a copy of the file from one video and audio codec to another,.Video Transcoding is the process then of: 10/21/2023 0 Comments Jump desktop loginTested with macOS 10.5+, TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC, Linux (Ubuntu Remote Desktop) International keyboard layouts VNC features: Printing redirection support (including a optional, super-fast server side-driver) Secure: 128-bit RDP, TLS/SSL, FIPS and NLA authentication supported Tested on: Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012/R2/2016, SBS Server, Windows 10ĭynamic resolution updates (Win 8.1/2012 R2+) You like and manage them all using your Google account (optional)īuilt-in SSH tunneling for RDP and VNC connections Multi-protocol: supports RDP, VNC and Fluid Remote Desktopįull international keyboard support for RDP, VNC and ARDĭictation support (Mountain Lion and later)ģ different ways to zoom and pan the remote screen (really useful when controlling multi-monitor remote systems from laptops)Įasy and secure setup: Automatically configure your PC or Mac for remote access without worrying about your router settings. In my 20+ years as a director, this show has been the most technically and artistically challenging so far, I could not have done this without our fantastic and supportive staff (Allison, Beth, Don, Michele, Rita, Rowan, and Tate), the largest creative and production team to work on a show since my arrival at HT, the talented Lenora Thom, Matilyn Hull and Amanda McLoughlin, Maddie Anderson (who put their creative hearts and souls into this show), and a brilliant cast who spent hours learning, reviewing, and mastering some of the most complex vocals and intense choreography to ever grace our stage. I took a big gulp, but also applied to direct the show knowing I would be devastated if I didn’t take it on. Instead, everyone love the idea, and a show was picked to anchor our 2023 season. At one of our 2023 first programming selection meetings, I suggested “What if we do Rock of Ages?” I truly thought I would get immediate push back on the size of the show, the complexity, the difficulty of the music, and the technical demands. At the time, I was preparing to direct another 80’s rock musical, Footloose, and wondered if this new show would succeed and eventually become available to community theatres.įast forward 12 years, a move to a new state AND a pandemic, I found myself as the Artistic Director of HT. If there are, then i represents the counts of distinct characters in the left half of the permutations, which can be arranged arbitrarily. We can test for that by simply adding up all the elements of t-i (using Tr): if the answer is less than 1, there are palindromic permutations, otherwise not. Note that palindromic permutations of the input exist exactly when there is at most one odd number among the original counts, that is, when there is at most one fraction in t. Therefore, to decide if a string is a permutation of a palindrome, we need to know if it can be written such that it’s the same forwards and backwards. Not as short as Martin Ender's Mathematica answer, but it's a cute approach nonetheless, which seems to be the same approach as in smls's Perl 6 answer.įirst, computes the counts of all the distinct characters in the input, divided by 2 then i=Floor rounds down any fractions occurring in t.
